Hello and welcome to VK5MRD, (Formally VK5FDMR)

My name is Dave. I am located in the city of Adelaide which is the capital city of South Australia (VK5).

My Grid Square locator is PF95ga. I am in CQ Zone 30 and ITU Zone 59.

For current Adelaide radar weather please click on the below link:-

I am married to my beautiful wife. One day I might convice her to go for her licence but I might have more of a chance with my beautiful daughter Hi Hi! I have been interested in radio communications for many years. I started out on 27MHz SSB CB radio late in 1988 and enjoyed working many DXCC over the years. I gained the Foundation Licence in February 2006 with the call sign VK5FDMR. I have since upgraded and now hold the Standard Licence gained in December 2007 with the call sign VK5MRD.

Here in Australia there are three grades of Amateur Radio licence. Foundation, Standard and Advanced licence. You may notice Four letter call signs here in Australia starting with "F". These are Foundation Licencees. A Foundation Licencee is allowed 10 watts PEP on the following bands:- 80m, 40m, 15m, 10m, 2m and 70cm and are also allowed to use IRLP and Echolink too. Since upgrading to the Standard Licence I am allowed to use all of the bands as before plus 20m, 6m, 23cm, 13cm and 6cm Amateur bands. Also up to 100 watts PX on HF will be a huge advantage to the 10 watts PX I had as a Foundation Licencee.

In the early to mid 90`s I was involved in the sport of Rowing, holding a Scholarship with both the South Australian Sports Institute and then with the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra (VK1). I made many South Australian State rowing teams including the South Australian Youth Eight and the South Australian Senior Mens Eight. In 1994 Rowing for the Adelaide Rowing Club, I was in the winning crew that won the South Australian Senior Mens Quad Scull, indecently our boat that we raced in was the “Oarsome Foursome`s” Olympic Games Emphacher . I have also won the South Australian School Boys Single Scull back to back and won many other numerous State Regattas and competed in many National Regattas and National Selection Regattas too. I have raced all around Australia and also in New Zealand on Lake Ruataniwha as a member of the 1992 Australian Trans Tasman Junior Team. In 1993 I was selected on the Australian Rowing Team . I enjoyed my time with rowing but could not continue with it due to my work commitments.

At the bottom of this page are five pictures of myself rowing in the "Single Scull" when I was on the Australian Rowing Team, racing on the best international rowing course in Australia "Lake Barrington" on the island of Tasmania (VK7)

My current qrz.com picture is of my mobile set up. Vehicle is a 1997 GM Holden VS Commodore. Antennas are a Diamond SG-7000, Diamond SG-7200, FAMPARC HF 8 band Tap whip, UHF CB 4.5dB whip and a 9dB mobile phone antenna. Radio`s are Icom 7000, Icom 208H and Electrophone TX6000. This photo was taken in October 2008 whilst returning home from a trip to Echuca (VK3). The big sign in the picture indicates the state border between South Australia (VK5) and Victoria (VK3). The location of this sign is just east of Pinaroo (VK5).

I work in the vehicle industry here in South Australia. A field which I have enjoyed very much. I have been involved in the vehicle industry now for over 14 years. Working for Mitsubishi Motors and General Motors Holden. At GM Holden we produce vehicles for the Australian market but also export to places such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen, Jordan, New Zealand, Brazil, North America, Fiji, Brunei, United Kingdom and South Africa. We export to every continent in the world except for Antartica Hi Hi. We are also building the Pontiac G8 which we export it to America. Our export vehicles fall under the badges of Pontiac, Chev, Opel, Buick and Holden amongst others.

You can check out the vehicles we produce if you click on the below link:-

2008 The Anniversary Year

Hi all, just had some information handed to me at work yesterday and thought that some of you might like to hear about it.

2008 was a momentous year for General Motors Holden and GM with a number of significant milestones to be reached throughout the year.

These include:-

30th Birthday of the GM Holden Commodore

40th Birthday of the GM Holden Monaro

50th Birthday of the GM Holden Vehicle Operations, Elizabeth (my work)

60th Anniversary of the first Australian Car the 48-215

and

100th years of General Motors

GM has launched a new website to support the centenary celebrations:-

http://www.gmnext.com/

Hope you all find this interesting.

When I have spare time which is not that often I enjoy Amateur Radio but When I am not on Amateur Radio or spending time with my family my other interests include building and racing Radio Controlled Cars and Radio Controlled Boats.

I change my qrz.com photo on a regular basis so come back again one day and you may see a different picture.

I must say a huge "Hi" to all my Ham friends around the world esp to all my good friends in the General Motors Amateur Radio Club in Detroit MI USA.

The GMARC can be found on Echolink at the WW8GM-R node 99846. GMARC weekly nets are Monday nights at 8pm local Detroit time. They can also be found on the internet if you click on the below link:-

http://www.gmarc.org/

VK5MRD is also a member of the GMARC in Detroit Michigan USA.

Prefer Icom in the Shack. Antenna for 6m/2m and 70cm is a “GP-15” Tri Band vertical. New antenna`s for 2m only, 2x 7 element yagi`s that are co-phased on a "H" frame, vertical pol. HF OCFD wire antenna for 80m, 40m, 20m and 15m with an ATU. For 10m my antennas are a ½ wave vertical and a 5 element Mono band yagi.

Here is a link where you can see my VHF aray:- http://www.users.bigpond.com/anvdg/

My favorite band is 10m and on the weekends you may hear me calling CQ on 10m SSB running at or under 100 watts PX between 28.390MHz to 28.500MHz if conditions are in, mainly 28.490MHz +/-. I also listen around on 10m FM too. 29.620MHz FM is our 10m Repeater frequency here that covers the greater Adelaide area, remember 29.520 input. Sometimes I also visit the VK Travelers Nets on 21.185MHz and 14.116MHz daily at 0300 UTC. I also enjoy chasing Troppo conditions on 2m and 70cm FM. Sometime in the near future I would love to get into 2m SSB. I enjoy 6m and a 6m beam is also on my list for SSB work. I like chasing TVDX with my Icom 7000. I enjoy going mobile in my car with an 8 Band Tap vertical off the back of the car similar to the “Outbacker” as I really enjoy mobile DX, as you can see in my qrz picture.

I am also active on SSTV using MMSSTV and a RIGblaster pro on 14.230MHz or 28.680MHz.

I am interested in Satellite communications with AO-51 and the ISS. I worked my first four contacts via the ISS last night 28/02/2009. It is quite easy and was a lot of fun, even with a hand held!

I have come across a couple of new rigs form Icom called the Icom 7600, the Icom 7700 and most recently the Icom 9100, wow what nice looking rigs! I am sure they would right at home in my shack. Mmm Maybe one day......

Thank you N8S and BS7H, it goes to show that patience and persistence pays off in the end! Well done on a great activation.
