There is a long story about the Sudan prefixes. As you can see from the SARA membership, all are ST2 except me ST0. The reason for this was that I got the first official licence although the group in Khartoum have been operating with the knowledge of the authorities for many years.

During the negotiations with the authorities, I wrongly assumed that Khartoum, being the capital should be so my license was made like this. I later found out that is was 2, not 0.

Sudan was never accredited by the ARRL and I had a job proving that I was legit and finally getting accreditation. I may have been the first one as I had the first official license but in respect to one of the other long time operators, my license was given the number 002.

Some where the various areas of Sudan were given numbers. Sudan is a very large country. 6 or 9 may be in the south, I don’t know.

Anyway, there are many NGO’s, UN troops etc. in the south of Sudan and many of these set up unofficial stations. None of these were ever accredited by the ARRL and were useless for DXCC.

So, the bad news is, your contact was probably one of these guys.

This leaves Sudan as one of the hard to get countries and would be a prime DX station for anyone who could get a license there as I did.
