YES, I was in the US Navy and NO the call sign is not because of my Navy
service. I received KN1NVY in sequence from the FCC at age 16 in Waterbury,
Connecticut, March 14, 1960. One year later, I received my Conditional Class
ticket on the same day I got my driver's license.
I just work CW with preference to rag chewing and working DX, 40-10M. NEVER
work SSB, contests or VHF/UHF. I'm frequently on the work bench tinkering with
amps or bringing a "tech special" back to peak performance.
Shack: 14 rigs...(3) FT-1000D, (2) TS-850S, (3) TS-940S, (2) IC-751, (2)
FT-990, (1) FT-1000MP MK-V and the FT-857 all complemented with the external
SGC ADSP-2 audio DSP, SP-6/DSP-59Y and MFJ-495 Keyer. The rigs are wired into a
switching system so that each can be used on any band, amp or antenna. Favorite
rig is a toss-up between the FT-1000D and the TS-850S but the TS-940S gets
plenty of air time. Love my radios!
Amps: Homebrewed 4CX1000 and two Drake L-4Bs (with RF deck mods and
homebrewed/modified power supplies). One L-4B is tuned to 40M and the other
L-4B is tuned to 20M (switchable to the 2 el quad or 3 el yagi). The 4CX1000 is
used mostly on 15M and 10M. Homebrewed single 3-500Z for WARC bands.
Antenna farm: 20M 3 el Cushcraft monobander at 60ft, homebrewed monoband 2 el
quads for 10-15-20 on a 55ft crank-up; 40M Inverted Vee; 30M sloping dipole;
17M 1.5 wave doublet. All antennas are trimmed so no tuners are required.
Other stuff: My interest in Ham Radio lead to a BEE degree from Villanova
University, 1967 and MS(Physics) from the University of Washington, 1987. I am
a practicing engineer involved mostly with avionics compliance/EMC testing.
Served during VietNam as US Navy Line Officer '67-69 followed by eight more
years at sea in the merchant marines as a Radio Operator/ROU ('75-83). Taught
math and physics at a local engineering college for nine years. Three Corvettes
(two '84 C4s and one '98 C5) and two motorcycles, 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan Classic
1500/FI (see pix), 1994 Kawasaki Vulcan-88. Call plate K1NVY on black bike on
left in photo. Motorcycling is the only activity that has ever competed with
hamming for my attention and $$$$.
