Born into a Navy family, and raised believing that everyone lived, worked, or studied in a different place every year, I cheerfully became a peripatetic! Until I went to college I never attended any school for more than two years! I've enjoyed my nomadic life and look forward to adventure. While still a boy, the chance news stand purchase of "QST" magazine, and the gift of a dog-eared 1941 edition of the ARRL "Radio Ameteur's Handbook" by a local "ham", led me to dream of communicating with the world using a home made radio and a wire hung in a tree. I was hooked! With the help of an S38B receiver, donated by my now deceased uncle VE1QZ which I then used for CW practice from W1AW, I taught myself Morse Code. I studied radio theory on my own from the Handbook, and built a crystal controlled 6AG7 - 807 MOPA CW transmitter from the Handbook. Ultimately I wrote the DOC amateur radio operator test to became a licensed ham at age 16. Back in those days the DOC test required 10 wpm perfect sending and receiving of Morse code, the drawing from memory of 5 complete schematic diagrams comprising; (1) superhet receiver, (2) MOPA transmitter with AM modulator, (3) wavemeter, (4) wavetrap, and (5) a code practice oscillator followed by verbal questions from the radio inspector on the five schematics drawn by the candidates. This was followed by a full written test comprising 10 questions on electronics theory and practice, no multiple choice questions back then! Back then, 'a test was a test'. [grin] Since then I have been interested in all things electrical and electronic. My current radio shack equipment line up here at my station K1PO in Indialantic By-the-Sea, FL is as follows: HF Transceivers; Yaesu FT-1000D with SP-5 speaker integrated with a Timewave DSP-59Y plus an Icom IC-706MKIIG. Shack Accessories; Flesher TU-300 RTTY TU, Heile ProSet4 Headphone-boom-mic, and Ameritron ATR-30 Antenna Tuner. Morse Code Keys; Vibroplex Deluxe Original bug, Schur Portable Wabler dual paddle, and a GHD GT501MIL straight key. Me? I love keys! Antenna forHF; Ground mounted 43 foot vertical (S9v) with 42 in-ground radials comprising a total of 1400 linear feet of #14copper wire. Antenna for VHF/UHF; Roof mounted 5/8 wave verticals for 2m and 70cm. Amateur Radio Operator licenses; Advanced Amateur (CDN) and Amateur Extra (USA). Callsigns held are listed for year issued in chronological order; VE1AEX (1958), VE3DZK (1975), VE2POB (1984), AB4BC (1986), K1PO (1998). Commercial Radio Operator Licenses; FCC, 2nd Class Radiotelegraph T2, and FCC GROL, both Radar endorsed. Member: ARRL, QCWA, FISTS, IEEE (ComSoc, Computer Society, Circuits and Systems Society) My only operating awards are Geratol WAS and Code Proficiency (25wpm). I have worked more than 100 DX countries but never kept track of the numbers. For several years I worked CW traffic nets in the ARRL NTS handling formal message traffic as both relay (ORS) and net control station (NCS). I have enjoyed many "Field Days". I was a VE with CAVEC and ARRL and have belonged to several radio clubs. A former apprenticed and licensed electrician, and past member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers [IBEW LU 1133], I ultimately became a registered Professional Engineer after graduating from University. I spent a decade in the Naval Reserve as an Electrician's Mate and Electronic Technician from which I was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer 2nd Class [P2ET(X)4 - Electronic Technician Trade Group 4]. I left school at 16, never having graduated from high school. At 22, "married with kids", I "talked" my way into Dalhousie University as "mature student" to study Electrical Engineering. Ultimately, with the support of my growing family, I went "all the way" through school, earning three degrees. [B.Eng. (EE) (Hons) from Dalhousie University, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. (EE) from University of Toronto]. As a full time university student, I worked "on the side" in the electrician trade as a "union guy" to help earn "our" way through University. I am proud of my two technically oriented sons, both [inactive] hams, the oldest Steve "The Chemist" the youngest Tim "The Engineer".Tim and his wife Oksana recently presented me with my first grand son Max. My wife Kathy and I both share a love of physical and outdoor activities; dancing (swing, country, tango), photography (Canon 7D, 40D), kayaking, sailing, hiking, and international travel, with my current country visit total at 32 countries on five continents. My dance hobby is furthered with the able assistance of my professional dance instructor wife Kathy. That girl can dance! My professional EE specialties are; analog electronics design, digital communications systems design, including DSP and coded modulation, software defined modems, and the development of computer aided engineering software. I have worked for both large and small corporations, e.g. ESE, Motorola, Electro-vend, Racal, BellSouth, Adtran, Hatteras, SHI and DRS and I have been a full time Associate Professor and an Adjunct Professor at several Universities. I have beenan entrepreneur in the role of either founder or part of the founding group of three early stage high techstartups. I currently operate as an independent professional consultant. I design mixed signal electronic systems and write code for digital data communications and DSP applications. Many of the products I design are shipped to world-wide commercial and military markets and are found throughout the telecommunications,Internet and the remote sensing markets. I have written two theses, some 35+ professional technical papers, several US Patents and Patent applications, and co-authored a graduate EE textbook. Some of my early professional written work may be found at most technical libraries in a textbook, shelved at: Library of Congress Call Number: TK7872.F5S42, or Dewey Call Number: 621.3815'33, to wit: Adel S. Sedra and Peter O. Brackett, "Filter Theory and Design: Active and Passive", Matrix Publishers, Portland, OR, 1978.
