Sorry to start off this way -- my bio is below -- but someone has been leaving
insulting messages using my callsign on the DX reflector at
http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/
For what it's worth I am a 15 wpm ragchew CW op. I don't work DX except
accidentally and I don't watch the DX reflectors at all. If you are visiting
because someone using my call (K3VV) has insulted you, please contact me at
rice@world.std.com with details.
I have appended a list of forged "K3VV" posts below my bio. I would
like to thank Vladimir, UA4WHX/9X0VB for bringing this to my attention.
Apologies for the distasteful digression -- back to the bio.
This is a picture of me (K3VV, Ken Rice) and Roger, an Arabian dromedary camel
who kindly ferried me around the Queensland outback a few years back.
YF Lisa (who took the picture above) and I live on a shady, tumbledown farm
(ca. 1789) in northern Bucks County Pennsylvania, about 50 miles north of
Philly. We raise bluetick coonhounds, chickens, ducks, and geese. More to the
point, we cultivate an unruly pack of "feral" antennas. Most recently
we put up two 135-foot OCF dipoles facing NS and EW.
Lisa and I are computational biology/biochemistry scientists for two
pharmaceutical companies in the Philly-Princeton-Bridgewater area.
I've been active off and on since 1963. Ex-calls are WN4LDE, WA4LDE and W3LDE.
My Elmer was Clarence White, W4KR (SK), a gentleman of a vanished era and a
first-rank engineer and operator who put the 50 KW clear channel station WSB on
the air. Clarence got me started in ham radio with a five-dollar ARC-5
40Mreceiver and a homebrew power supply that he showed me how to build.
Most importantly, Clarence taught me the fundamentals of the scientific method.
I am almost certain that I would not be a scientist today if Clarence had not
served up such convincing and appealing presentations of the scientific method
in 1962 and 1963. Thanks and RIP, Clarence.
I work HF CW pretty much exclusively, often on 40, 30, and 20 meter QRP
frequencies. I caught the QRP bug a few years back, and I run 5 watts most of
the time. My field rig is an Elecraft K1 built meticulously by Fil Fuma, a good
friend and another first-rank engineer.
A used Elecraft K2 is a fairly recent addition to the shack. Recently Fil Fuma
built a KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2 case to go along with the K2. Fil does
outstanding work.
I am two states removed from a long-term, self-defined goal that as far as I
know is recognized by no sanctioning organization: "The 30-minute-or-more
unscheduled CW ragchew WAS". (Need AK and HI.)
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see you on the QRP frequencies.
73,
Ken
