Midland 5001z / Gotta know whats going on everywhere.

Moved to Florida about five years ago and within two weeks went through Frances and Jean after that we went through Wilma. It was a bit unnerving sitting in the house not knowing what was going on.

Well, being in the roofing industry there was no shortage of work at that time. In my travels I had noticed various roof mounted verticals and some towers. So I decided to ask one potential customer what the vertical was for. 2m / 70cm was the response. Then he showed me the ground mounted HF vertical hidden in the tree line behind the house. (Hiding from the HOA) That led to a myriad of questions. What is it? What can i use it for? And on and on. That's when I found out about the EOC here in Palm Beach County and how they used 2m and 70cm  to communicate with hams before during and after a hurricane. I was hooked.

After that I made some contacts and went to the Tech classes at the EOC. Passed the Tech then a few months later passed the general.

I found there are a lot of hams here in South Florida and many of them took to the hobby to stay informed and pass information along during extreme weather events. I think that is a good idea.

As of this writing the economy is way off, and the feds don't  seem interested in the private sector. They just want to enlarge the government until we look something like Venezuela and everyone is on the government dole.

I'm looking foward to our own little stimulus package sometime late this summer in the form of a CAT 1 or 2 and oddly enough there are many more looking for the same stimulus. It'll be good for business and it will keep us hams frosty.

Stay safe
