First licensed in 1955 (age 15) as WN7GKT (novice). Upgraded a year later to W7GKT (general). First rig was a Heathkit DX-35 cw transmitter and National NC-300 receiver--worked hard and saved a lot to buy that fine receiver. Then at age 17 I sold the station to buy a car--had to have wheels. At age 21 and married, I built a Heathkit Apache TX-1 transmitter and bought a Hammerlund HQ-180X receiver and was back on the air again--am mode. Graduated from BYU Engineering School (EE) in 1966. After graduation moved my wife and two kids to Southern California to begin a career and make some money. Too busy to be active on the air and my license expired at renewal. Re-licensed again in 1979 and received callsign N6BNN. Returned to Utah in February 2007 and secured the new vanity callsign K7RFR. Current station is a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V transceiver, ICOM IC706MkIIG transceiver, and Ameritron ALS-600 solid-state amplifier. HF antenna is an Outbacker:Outreach 500 6m-80m verticle and Outpost tripod base mount. I primarily operate hf/ssb 40m, 20m,17m and 15m. Also a little 2m/70cm and occasional Echolink. I retired in December 2002 and now have more time for hamming, traveling and spending time with fourteen grandkids.
