Welcome to the QRZ site of the  Menominee D.A.R Radio club, the only Boy's & Girls club ham station, in the Nation.    The photo above shows several youngsters busily working on 20meters, logging, and taking a practice exam.  The two young girls in the rear are working our morse code keyer and display, a very popular ham radio activity

Through the "magic" of ham radio, the K8DAR has given our local youth a very exciting experience in communications, technology, and place geography throughout the world.

Special Announcement Update:  Our newest ham is Abbey (on right) who passed her Tech exam on Sept 19.  Callsign is KC9QNR. Anna and Abby are sisters.  Makes a total of  12 youngsters since the beginning of our ham radio program in 2006.   Anna on left, and new ham Abbey on right.

*Latest News: 10/15 Just made contact with K4M on Midway Is. with Abbey KC9QNR at the mike.  Our 105th DX country, with 21 confirmed.

We recently received a plaque from the Wisconsin Council of Boys & Girls clubs for the Best Overall Program.   A similar plaque was received earlier from the Michigan Council of Boys & Girls club.   An honor that we really are proud of.

The photo here shows our new banner, along with control op, Ed KG8CX.

K8DAR is the vanity call for the Menominee DAR Boys and Girls Club ham station. We were organized on Jan. 31, 2006, and now have a fully equipped station with two hf operating positions, one vhf/uhf, and a new two meter dedicated to monitoring our local repeater. HF Station #1 is a Kenwood TS-570S running in to one of two antennas (an R7 vertical, and a 20/40/80 loop, and station #2 is aHeath SB1400 feeding its signal into the same set of antennas via an MFJ antenna switch. The Kenwood has a digital voice keyer which many youngsters enjoy using, to perfect their voice technique.   Both rigs have a dedicated computer with Win-EQF logging software.  We also have a Morse code reader and key that many youngster enjoy using to learn the code.

One of our several awards is shown above...the best overall program of any Boys & Girls club in the state of Michigan.  We are very proud of that recognition.

This recent picture shows several youngsters enjoying time in the K8DAR ham shack.   The YL in the middle is Abbey, a newly licensed Technician.

Here we see a youngster putting a pin in our world map to mark a new DX country he just contacted.  As you can see, we have made many contacts all across the world.   Helping Hunter is Jim KS8O, a local ham and occasional DAR radio room volunteer.

*Note:  We made contact with K5D on four bands with four different young ops, during the recent major DX-pedition.

We now have two newer computers connected to the internet.   One is dedicated to practice exams and checking out QRZ information.  The other is paired with our Heath SB1400 hf rig.  The two HF rigs have logging software so the DAR members can log their calls.   Thanks to Lloyd KG6KWY for helping us to get the additional computers.  We are now a full fledged contest station with our two rigs and computers.

The youngsters operate the station during hours when the facilityis open and a control operator is present. We have licensed TWELVE youngsters so far, and our "Ham Radio Honor Roll" plaque is now full.  Several of our young hams are also members of the nationwide  group YACHT ...Y-oung A-mateurs C-ontestH-am T-eam, which already has 55 youth members in 12 states, as well as South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S. .  http://www.wd8dx.com/yacht.html

Send QSL cards to the address listed with SASE.  The kids very much enjoy receiving their own cards. We usually ask for several cards...one for each of the youngsters making the contact, and the second for our large bulletin board and scrapbook. These youngsters are the future of ham radio. Look for us on the bands. We love making contacts around the U.S. and the world through the magic of radio. Check out our webpage http://www.thedar.org and click on our qsl card.

Two recently licensed DAR hams are Anna KC9QCQ  Isn't that a great callsign! ... and her sister Abbey   KC9QNR.   Another sister is planning to get her Technician soon.  We'll then have 3 licensed YL's in one family.   Both Anna and Abbey are working on upgrading to General.

This photo shows two local young hams celebrating their birthdays on the last day of the DAR summer session:  on bottom is Derek KD8LQB, at the top is Tyler KC9FKE.   Both had birthdays on Aug. 21.

Listen for the international Echolink Youth Net on node #44407 currently on the K9KJM Sturgeon Bay repeater, temporarily at 9am CDST on Sun.    The EiYN will shortly move to the W8PIF Menominee repeater with a change to Saturdays at 9am CST

Looking down the road to March of 2010, the K8DAR callsign is planned to participate in the Wisconsin QSO party on Mar. 14, from a location in Peshtigo, WI.  (Marinette Co.)  We expect to have a group of young licensed hams involved as well as a few others from the Menominee DAR Radio Club.

Thanks to all who have responded to our calls, and have sent their QSL cards. 73 from... Ed Engleman, KG8CX Control operator and trustee for K8DAR... Asst. Section Manager for Youth, ARRL Wisconsin section
