I first came across Ham Radio in 1950. Our next door neighbor was a ham, but only had one chance to show us his secret world of glowing filaments and beeps and people talking from such exotic places as Iowa. Sadly we moved shortly after that.

My next ham radio close encounter was in 1966 with Monte WA6CUW now W6CUW. I was home on leave from Uncle Sam's Air Force. Still while I was all charged up and ready to get that first license, time was not on my side.

Finally one war later I met Lee WA9CFU now K0LW who cornered me long enough to give the novice exam. I was first licensed in 1971 and got the call WN9JAT, and got my Advanced shortly after that. I kept the old novice call since it was by that time somewhat unique. The FCC had gone to phase1 of the incentive licensing. I upgraded to Extra in 1986 and kept the old novice prefix. Sadly I parted with the novice prefix in 1996. I enjoy DXing and contesting on CW/SSB as well as RTTY and other digital modes. About 70% of my air time is on cw. I was off the air for about 4 years after a tornado took down my towers and monoband antennas. I got back on the air in February 2005 with 100 watts and 5 wire dipoles. This is just about right for cw qsos.

My station antennas have been upgraded more recently, thanks to some gratefully appreciated help from fellow hams and friends.I have a website with a little further background as well as an online log for WN9JAT and K9MY. If you do check out the log please be patient as it takes a while to update the calls. FYI, that's my son Brian up the tower. I am neither that skinny nor have that much hair. HI HI.
