(Dolores) Lollie Garay teaches Intermediate/Middle School Science at Redd
School in Houston Tx. She holds a Master of Science Teaching degree from Rice
University, Houston. A life-long learner herself, Lollie immerses her students
in active learning and real-time science that allows students to construct
knowledge and learn skills that can be applied to life and careers. Her
"classroom' extends throughout the community through venues she develops
to involve families and professionals in the learning process. She created the
LABRATS project at her school (see W5LAB bio) and offers yearly Family Science
programs.Her partnership with the Northwest Amateur Radio Society (NARS) has
licensed 7 elementary/middle school students and 5 adults to date.The LABRATS
Radio Club, with mentor Jerry Whiting (KB5UGD)gives students opportunities in
active construction and electronics that reinforces skill development and helps
them make sense of abstract concepts.Lollie is active in professional
development and organizations, and presents at the local, state, and national
levels. Among her teaching honors and awards, she was most recently chosen as
an IPY/PolarTREC teacher for an international scienctific expedition to
Antarctica in 2007, and is the Air Force Association's Houston Teacher of the
Year for 2008.
