I’m currently trying to complete Nine Band Worked All States (9BWAS)

Please contact me if you can help with 9BWAS or if I can help you with a QSO from Maryland.

I need the following states on LOTW (any mode):

160 Meters: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, MT, NV, NM, OK, SD, UT, WA, WY.

About Me:

I was active duty US Navy for 20 years (1984-2004).It was my job to troubleshoot, repair and configure various WAN's, verify their Information Assurance posture and provide radio frequency links to connect the ship to the shore.

For those of you familiar with Navy parlance, I was an ITCS (formerly known as Radioman or RM for short).

Somehow in my Navy career I managed to visit over 15 countries in four continents, sail three oceans and see some very interesting things. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

I currently work for a large entity in the communication / information assurance field.

My fascination with amateur radio and scanning probably started when I was very young, listening to my Grandfather(W9IRA, SK) talk on his radio. When I joined the military in 1984, communication duties further tweaked my interest.

I am QRV for almost any digital mode; please contact me if you want to arrange a SKED.

Awards:

Five Band Worked All States (5BWAS) #3,027 (with endorsements for 12,17 and 30 Meters) January2012.

Worked All States (WAS) on 40 Meters using MFSK-16 August 2011. ARRL does not number these types of WAS, I suspect I am the first to do so with MFSK-16.

Islands On The Air (IOTA) Mixed #3291 July 2011

Triple Play Award (TPA): #362 January 2010

DX Century Club (DXCC) Mixed: #43,509 Feb 2010

Worked All Continents (WAC) Mixed: April 2010

Worked All States (WAS) Basic: #53,878 July 2009

My Station:

Radio: Kenwood TS-2000, 100watts available

Primary Antenna: DX Engineering 43 Foot vertical with SGC 230 external tuner

Secondary Antenna:G5RV at 35 feet with MFJ 994B.

I am often asked about my vertical antenna. Here are the particulars:

I have posted a video clip of it on You Tube. Search for DX Engineering Vertical Antenna.

It’s manufactured by DX Engineering: http://www.dxengineering.com/. If you search for 43 foot Multiband Vertical/Remote Tuner Package or merely “DXE-MBVE-1-3ATP” you should find it. In addition to the antenna, Ipurchased the DX Engineering stainless steel radial plant (DXE-RADP-1P). I highly recommend their radial plate, whether using DX Engineering’s antenna, a competitor or your own homebrew variant. It’s well worth the money. The SGC 230 tuner fits on the mount very nicely. There are approximately thirty radials, each 35 feet in length. I do not use guys on the antenna and it holds up very well in strong winds. If you are concerned about high winds or lightening, it is very quick and easy for one person to lie the antenna down on a sawhorse. It takes one person approximately five minutes to accomplish this.

How well does it work? If your measure of success is ability to contact distant DX, I recently completed DXCC with this antenna (including Australia and Japan.) I have never owned an amplifier – these contacts were made with ~ 40 watts.

It tunes very well on 10 through160 meters using the SGC 230 tuner.

Tips regarding installation of the DX Engineering 43 foot vertical:

One person can assemble this antenna – but it is much easier with two.

Make sure there is an open path (no trees, bushes, etc in the way) to lie the antenna down when desired.

There is a lot of excellent information available on vertical antennas. Research. Read it. Understand it. Learn for yourself. Don’t listen to the vertical antenna curmudgeons (they don’t work, poor radiators, blah, blah, blah). I recommend the ARRL’s “Vertical Antenna Classics” and “More Vertical Antenna Classics”.

QSL:

I QSL 100% VIA LOTW, E-QSL or Direct with SASE. I upload to LOTW at least once a day. BURO is OK, but very slow.

USA: Send your card with stamped addressed envelope, I will return a card to you. Unless previously agreed to; no envelope or no stamp: I will not mail a card to you.

DX: I will QSL direct with DX stations if you include a self addressed envelope and one paper unit of currency (amount is not important; I am just collecting foreign monies). No IRC please.

Ma QSL otsene DX jaamad, kui Te ise adresseeritud ümbrik ja üks paber valuutaühikuna (summa pole oluline, ma olen lihtsalt kogumise välis-raha).

Ég mun QSL beint með DX stöðvar ef þú fela í sér sjálf beint umslagi og einn pappír einingu af gjaldeyri (upphæð er ekki mikilvægt, ég er bara að safna erlendum fjárhæðum).

Ja ću QSL direktno sa DX postaje ako su isti se obratio omotnicu i jedan rad jedinica valute (iznos nije važno, ja sam samo prikupljanje stranih novac).

Some Q signals have never made it to the ARRL's official list. Here are some that many agree would be useful in appropriate situations. As with regular Q signals, each can be a statement or a question, depending on whether a question mark follows it.

QBA - My antenna is BIG!

QBA? - How big is your antenna?

QBO - Don't sit next to that guy in the meeting.

QBO? - Buddy, can you spare some soap?

QBS - It's getting deep in here.

QBS? - Did I tell you about the one that got away?

QCP - I am using Cat Power(From Rotary Cat Power Wheel) QCP? - Are you using Cat Power?

QCW - I am going to whistle Morse Code on FM (or SSB) QCW? - Why are you whistling Morse?

QDR - Damn Right the frequency is busy! (In response to QRL) QDR? - Do you have a Receiver? (In response to QRL) QET - Phone home.

QET? - Has anyone called me from another planet?

QFH - This frequency is MINE! - go elsewhere.

QFH? - Is this frequency hogged?

QHI - I am jumping in quick to say hi, then going QRT.

QHI? - Are you leaving after only one transmission?

QLF - I am sending with my left foot.

QLF? - Are you sending with your left foot?

QOK - Your last transmission was Okie Dokie.

QOK? - Was my last transmission OK?

QPM - Your signal is purr modulated.

QPM? - Is my signal purr modulated?

QRC - Warning, rag chewer on frequency.

QRC? - Are you a rag chewer?

QWC? - Who cares?

QWC - I don't care

QZZ - I fell asleep at the mike.

QZZ? - Is that a 60Hz hum, or are you snoring?
