My primary focus in ham radio is on emergency and community service. I joined
Blackberry REACT (Radio Emergency & Associated Communication Teams) and became
a ham in October 2001, in direct response to the tragic events of September 11.
An American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Emergency Communications Course
introduced me to the National Traffic System (NTS), a methodology and process
for creating and sending short text messages via ham radio. Used primarily for
relaying health and welfare traffic after emergencies, NTS is also a great way
to send birthday greetings and simple messages to non-hams and hams around the
world. I serve as the Section Traffic Manager for the ARRL Silicon Valley
Section, and as an Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Mountain View Amateur
Radio Emergency Services (ARES). I am also involved in radio communications for
the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Volunteering a few hours a month can make a big
difference to your community, besides being a lot of fun!
