Thanks for looking me up!
I use the ICOM 7000 for mobile and fixed operations. However, I really enjoy taking HAM radio outdoors using my QRP solar setup shown in the photo. As an alternative to solar power, for use on overcast days, I use a Honda 2000i inverter-generator to power my station.
Working outdoors I normally use a Yaesu FT 817ND in 5 watt QRP mode, but occasionally drive a Ramsey QRP AMP to 20 watts or a HF Packer Amp to 35 watts. Both Amps work well. The solar array let's me operate uninterrupted from sunrise to sunset. The solar cells keep charged an 8 amp-hour battery for the amp and the FT 817 internal battery. I have made SSB phone and PSK31 contacts throughout the world using this simple setup. I have found that QRP operation has made me a far more patient individual, and I make many contacts with other stations that have really great antennas!
I have built a new, higher power solar system that keeps a 12 volt marine battery charged. This new system allows me to use the Icom 7000 in the park all day using the sun, and well into the night on residual battery power.
Recently I set up a digipeater (digital repeater) to aid users of APRS (KQ4G-1). I enjoy using APRS (www.aprs.fi) to track airplanes (amateurs who fly), high altitude balloons (such as Adler out of Chicago), ships and boats around the world, hikers, and my personal vehicles. While there are many uses for APRS, it is an excellent tool for first responders, search and rescue teams, and special events where amateurs can help track bikers and runners.
Amateur radio is truly amazing, and with the traditional and many newer modes available, a never- ending source of capability and wonder.
Incidentally, my father is 93 years young, and was first an amateur radio operatorin 1937. His license lapsed while he followed a career as a Naval Aviator. However, during the last two years, he has taken and passed the Tech and General Exams! He also apllied for and received his original Call Sign - W4CZP. He lives in Florida, and makes contacts daily!
Thanks again for looking me up!!
