A Tribute to the Original " N4LA" "Big John" John Foster . (1928 - 2007)
By: Chris R Haley NB4M
John was a very good friend of mine. A large frame fellow everyone on 75m called "Big John".
He lived not far inPetersburg TN, Lincoln County, very near where the Jack Daniels whiskey is made.
John was an avid CW and DX operator. He also loved the TN SSB & CW Traffic Nets and a CW rag chew or two in the evenings. Usually on a bug.
He also loved Ten Tec gear and supporting his local Petersburg church which he called the "taber-nackle". He even printed the bulltins each week for the large crowd of about 20 folks.
He would always drive out and visit my family when we were in the southern TN area in our motorcoachand was always amazed at our deaf cat that rode on the dash of the coach as we traveled.
We had a standing appointment each year as I would always pick him upon my wayto the Huntsville AL hamfest.
If I remember corretly, he should beon the DXCC Honor Roll. He had worked them all throughout the years, even a lot of the deleted countries.
The only time I got him stirred up whas when I worked the VK0M, one that he had always missed.
John was a DX and CW mentor for me and also one of the kindest men I've ever known. I'm considerably younger, so took many nights of John's time talking about different bugs and the art of taming them.
John had some health issues, nothing severe, but died unexpectedly in his sleep.
I think of him often, miss hearing his voice, and long dash on the bug.
He was a good friend and a great man.
Chris, NB4M
