Ham radio operator since 1979. I am a native Houstonian, and except for a brief
overseas vacation in Europe in the early 1970s courtesy of the US Army, Houston
is home. Private pilot since 2000, technical writer by day, and webmaster for
the the Northwest Amateur Radio Society (http://w5nc.net) in Houston, the Texas
QSO Party (http://www.txqp.org), and Projects by N5BIA (http://n5bia.com).
Before I changed careers after the oil bust in the 1980s, I was employed as an
electronic engineer in the oilfield service industry. I worked for a
ground-penetrating radar company in the 1990s for several years before changing
careers to technical writing. With my design and development background, I have
as much fun designing and building as I do operating. Some of the projects I
have designed are a battery charger for SLA/VRLA batteries, a sound card
interface, and a tune button activator for late model Icom transceivers. More
info on the Projects by N5BIA website, http://n5bia.com.
Current operating interests include weak-signal digital modes, improving my CW
skills, and building an antenna farm in a deed-restricted community. Look for
me around 7050 or 14050 (CW), 14071 (PSK-31) or in the voice segments on 20.
