Originally licensed in 1981 as VE4ALZ. The first amateur in Manitoba and second in Canada to obtain the Digital operator's certificate without first having an amateur or advanced amateur class certificate. From 1981 to 1984 was active with the University of Manitoba Amateur Radio Society (VE4UM). As technical coordinator, worked intensely to get the VE4UMR repeater on the air. Started experimenting with packet in 1981 and placed the first digipeter in Winnipeg on the air in 1984. Graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1984 with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. Married and moved to Alberta in 1986 and continued exploring VHF packet radio as VE6BUS. Returned to Manitoba in 1988 and assumed the current call VE4EAR. In 1992 moved to Coral Springs Florida just in time to enjoy Hurricane Andrew. Operated as VE4EAR/4 for just over a year before returning to Winnipeg. Professionally I have been a microwave design engineer developing high power 2.5, 13, 18, and 23 GHz transmitters and amplifiers. Since 1998 I have been the Communications Engineer for the City of Winnipeg, responsible for all VHF, UHF, 800 MHz, microwave voice and data radios systems. An active member of MTUG (Motorola Trunking User Group) and APCO (Association of Public Safety Communication Officials). Since 2000 I have been the president of the Manitoba Repeater society. I still enjoy public service communication events, ARES activities and I am now just starting to explore HF, dxing and contesting. During the summer and fall of 2008, installed a new 50' tower and placed a Force 12 Delta 240 (2 element shorty forty) at 63', an Optibeam OB6-5, 5 element 6m yagi and an Optibeam OB11-5 5 band HF yagi at 52 feet. This winter we will see how it compares to th eold 130 doublet and SteppIR vertical. Last modified: 2011-01-21 21:39:44, 1872 bytes cached
