I got interested in radio in the '60s reading a Popular Electronics special
Communications Annual publication I bought from the local drug store.
Listening to shortwave bands on old radios purchased from the Salvation Army
introduced me to ham AM operators. I "upgraded" to an NC-88 and could
then copy SSB & CW, which I taught myself. I took my first license test at FCC
HQ in St. Paul on Easter break, 1969; came away as a Tech, got callsign WA0YKN.
Spent the spring & summer on 6 meter AM on a LaFayette HE-45B. Next trip to HQ
in September got me the Advanced, got an SX-71 and a Viking Valiant, and began
HF operation. Had to wait two years then, but got Extra class certificate #180
at FCC HQ in 1971. I sent in a change of address license upgrade in 1977, and
realized the FCC was handing out 1x2 calls to Extras, so I checked the box and
got W0FL.
I have been mostly a casual operator, enjoying HF CW. I like handing out points
in contests; my only contest award came when I was the Dakota Division leader
for the ARRL Ten Meter contest, barely nudging out WB0ADO in heated
competition.
I have been employed as an Electrical Engineer since 1974, doing
RF/Digital/Analog hardware design, and a lot of software programming. I have a
lovely wife, three rational children, and usually 1 dog.
I guess you can e-mail me if you need to know more. 73, Brian
