W4ABZ will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of “The Great Locomotive Chase” on April 7th, 14:00 – 18:00Z on either 7.265 or 14.265 (as conditions permit).
“The General” of the Western & Atlantic Railroad was hijacked the morning of April 12, 1862 in Big Shanty (now Kennesaw), Georgia and taken northward towards Chattanooga by a group of Union spies. It was chased by the train’s conductor (William Fuller) and others on various hand cars, locomotives, and actually on foot at times. Eventually, just after passing through Ringgold, the General ran out of fuel and was abandoned by “Andrews’ Raiders” just as Fuller’s group was catching up to them with the locomotive “The Texas” (running in reverse).
We hope to be operating across the railroad tracks from the historic Ringgold Depot, which was in existence as the General and the Texas passed by back in 1862, so please excuse any QRM from current day trains passing by.
