Logbook

Thanks for stopping by! At the right, you can see my latest log entries. Scroll down to the bottom for a map of stations worked. If I am on the air, the log will show what frequency I am currently on.

I operated W4D from May 10 through May 20, 2010. I am also operating K4D from May 17, 2011 until May 25, 2011. QSLs for this call for these times ONLY should be sent DIRECT ONLY via W4PG (SASE suggested) to the address listed above. This special 1X1 is for the Dayton Hamvention, which I attended and operated mobile while driving to Dayton from the home QTH in Florida. To see other special one by one calls, please click here:

1X1 Calls

I was first licensed at age 12 as WN4RKU in July of 1970. I upgraded to general later that year becoming WB4RKU and now hold an extra class. As a young teenager I worked after school and weekends repairing radios and televisions. I saved my money to buy ham gear and antennas and talked my parents (now silent keys, both were hams) into putting up a 56’ tower in our front yard with a 3 ele tri-band quad! Little did I know how lucky I had it as a young ham! My father was K4DFW (original call) and when W4DFW came open, I obtained that call. I acquired W4PG in September of 2009.

I was net control for the Carolinas Net (CN) for several years on CW in the early 1970s and used to check into the 4RN and EAN nets as needed. I enjoyed SSTV when it first became operational and was one of the first few stations in SC on SSTV back when SC on SSTV was real DX! I now live with the XYL in Florida. I occasionally operate PSK as well.

I currently listen much more than I talk. I enjoy DX and have just recently installed my first tower since that one when I was a kid, some 35 years later. My antennas are a 4 ele SteppIR and 2 ele 40 meter beam atop a crank-up US Tower, and a folded dipole for 80 meters. The 40 meter beam is at 101 feet and the SteppIR is at 91 ft:

My shack consists of an Icom IC-7800 transceiver with a PW-1 amplifier when needed. The audio train consists of a Behringer MIC2200 preamplifier controlling a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone. The audio is shaped by a Behringer Ultra-Curve Pro DEQ2496 digital audio processor. I also have a Behringer 8-channel mixer/splitter for when I would rather use a Heil Pro Set Elite headset. The headset is using the new HC-6 broadband element from Heil.

My day job is representing physicians and other healthcare providers in medical malpractice cases. Prior to becoming an attorney, I used to practice medicine in the sub-specialty of nephrology.

I also enjoy flying sailplanes, also called gliders. Here is a self-portrait while flying at 27,000 feet over the Sierra Nevada mountains:

This is South Lake Tahoe from 25,000 feet. Heavenly Mountain ski resort is at the bottom left:

The ship I flew to 27,000 feet without an engine on a wing and a prayer:

I hope to see you down the log.
