Although I have had a lifelong interest in electronics and radio, built many a
Heathkit from and after 1954 and learned Morse Code in the Air Force in 1961, I
was not licensed until 1993. I came by such delay honestly, since my father,
who held a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University
and spent his lifetime as a radio engineer, ran spark as a 10 year old in 1919
but never held a license. He told me that spark was so effective that on a good
day, he could QSO all the way to San Francisco from his home in Oakland by
using a long wire to his box kite.
I am a CW contester and DXer and submit scores to most of the major contests.
Look for W5MJ in all the contests, as the saying goes, but don't be surprised
if you don't find me: I try to have a life beyond CW, though it's difficult.
I have been an Extra since early 1994. My wife, Millie KC5UTP, is a tech plus
(if there is such a thing under Restructuring).
