My first call W4RRG was issued in 1948. I enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 during the Korean conflict and I attended electronics and radar schools. After my discharge, I returned to school at the University of North Carolina which I attended full time as well as worked full time for the new university television station, WUNC. In 1956, with school behind me, I took a position as Chief Engineer in New Orleans to design and install a new television station, and I changed my call to W5UOX. When extra class licensees were offered vanity calls in the late 1960s, I took advantage of the opportunity to get my current call.
The picture above is my ham radio and computer station. all built into a small closet in my office at home. From left to right, Kenwood SP-230 speaker, Kenwood AT-230 antenna tuner+ antenna switch+power and swr meter, Kenwood TS-930S transceiver, computer monitor, D104 microphone on an Atlas gooseneck , and a Heath SB-200 that has been sold since the picture was taken (less is more). On the desk is the Kent paddle for CW, The equipment on the shelf above is for the printers, a scanner, and of course, a television set! As you can see, this is a very compact ham/computer station, but the lay out is also very convenient and functional.
My amateur radio interests are varied but my age and physical condition now prevent many activities. I am active on mostly CW , and occasionally PSK31. I have a wonderful time with Ham Radio and if you hear W5ZV, give me a call, I'd love to meet you.
