HAWAII amateur radio operation. In JULY 2008 I was at Pearl Harbor for NAVAL cadet training and I operated amateur radio station KH6BB aboard the USS Missouri BB-63 - see http://www.ussmissouri.com. I appreciated the help given by KH6BB CLUB MEMBERS - Jim, WH6Q AND Ned, KH7JJ who had the shack ready for me. It was outstanding to work stations around the world including one from Wisconsin NZ9Z - John a fellow DX member of NEWDXA. - see for info on KH6BB http://www.kh6bb.org dets.org

NETS & BUREAUS: I use and have return QSL envelopes on file at: 3.905CC QSL bureaus, OMISS bureau, YL-ISSB bureau, and for DX I belong to the W9/K9 (ARRL) incoming bureau. I am a member of OMISS,the 3905CC, YL-ISSB and the Geratol Net. I continue to work on additional awards from these groups.

GERATOL NET: I am very pleased to be a member of the Geratol Net as of January 30,2008.   Working only extra class operators with extra class call signs 1x2, 2x1 and 2x2A. It feels great. My first contacts on this net were made on December 9, 2007. It took just a bit over one month to work the 50 states on 80 meters, collect and submit QSL cards and receive my Geratol number. I received my DIRECTORS number in March 08. THANKS to the great operators and net controls on the Geratol Net for their patience, friendliness, and understanding. Good role models. You made a young amateur radio operator feel welcome. Tis' appreciated!

ARRL AWARDS: I have the ARRL - WAS award - mixed bands -(Worked All States-20/NOV/07) and the WAC award (Worked All Continents-05/DEC/07). As of 22/FEB/08 the 80 meter endorsement added to the basic WAS award already issued.  On 24/DEC/08 I received my ARRL 40 meter endorsement to my WAS award.  I have my DXCC basic 100 entities award 15/APR/08.  As you know it can be a challenge getting QSL cards from some DX stations. Thanks to the DX stations who provide returning QSL cards.

CONTACT NUMBER - 1,000 - On January 13, 2008 @ 0040 UTC on 3.668 - Geratol Net I worked K3TLB (Tom in PA) for contact number 1,000. I made my first amateur radio contact on June 16, 2007. It has been fun and a great experience.

QSL'ing I don't mean to offend anyone but I have received DX and STATE side QSL cards that are not made out correctly. Wrong call sign, no call sign, date wrong, no UTC, the basic info is wrong, in this day and age of very expensive postage costs - I am asking that you please check your MADE out returning QSL card closely. It is costly to send State Side QSL cards and direct and return DX QSL's are very costly at over $3.00 (US) each. If the QSL you send in return is made out wrong it can't be used for any awards it is a large waste of postage money for a budget. Also, when you open an envelope you may have waited months for it is a disappointment to see it is made out wrong. Thank you for your consideration.

LICENSE: I received my Tech license at a testing session in Marshfield, WI on June 3, 2007 - then on Saturday, June 23, 2007 I went to Menominee, MI and took the General exam in a tent at the Marinette, WI & Menominee, MI Radio Club (W8PIF) M&M Club field day. I realized I needed to have access to more frequencies so I went to a testing session in Fond Du Lac, WI and passed the final upgrade.

I have learned about operating procedures, nets and net protocols, ragchewing, different modes, and DX'ing. Thank you to the more experience hams who have helped me along the way with friendly and constructive comments.

EQUIPMENT: The equipment I am using is a Yaesu FT-1000D and when needed a linear amp into a Force 12 (C-3), tri-bander at 55 feet. I also have an all band inverted V. I use the ProLog logging program for all contacts and up loading to LOTW and eQSL. I am looking at and reviewing transceivers for a possible upgrade.

OTHER INTERESTS: I am a drummer, I have a second degree black belt in karate (5 years training) and during the summer I am on a trap shooting team. I am a certified PADI "open water scuba diver" and have made the four - 40 foot dives required. I did scuba dive in Hawaii while there during cadet training. I also enjoy vertical climbing and have had training in that activity. I am on the high school swim team.

USNSCC: For the last four years I have been a member of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Flatley Division, Green Bay, WI we meet at the Naval Operational Support Center (NOSC) which was the Naval Reserve Center. We meet one week-end per month.

I started my career at age 11 (2004) as I was entering 5th grade. During the summer (July-2005) I attended Navy League Boot Camp - USNLCC. When I reached age 13 I transferred into the senior cadet program - USNSCC.

My USNSCC career has given me the opportunity to attended the following outstanding USNSCC trainings:

1) Boot camp as a recruit (June-2006) at RTC Great Lakes, IL.

2) Naval Engineering Training (July-2006) at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL.

3) Naval Intelligence Training (July-2007) at Naval Base - San Diego, CA. This was an excellent training evolution and I gained valuable knowledge about the Intelligence community.

4) POLA - Petty Officer Leadership Academy during (July/Aug 2007) at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL. This enhanced my leadership skills.

5) Naval Recruit Training Command Great Lakes,IL returning this time as a petty officer staff cadet (June-2008) helping to train new Naval recruits to the USNSCC. I feel privileged that I was selected to staff this training! Thanks USNSCC. see http://www.nsgreatlakes.navy.mil

6) Heritage History Pearl Harbor Hawaii (July-2008) follow up intelligence/investigation on the Attack on Pearl Harbor - and Hawaii culture. Excellent training evolution. We berthed aboard the USS Missouri, BB-63 during training. It is a great ship!! see http://navysite.de/homeports/pearlharbor.htm

7) My shipboard 10 day training scheduled for August 08 aboard YP-671 - Yard Patrol Boat - was cancelled. I was looking forward to that training evolution. YP671 - Manatra training on the Great Lakes.

8) Completed FAA Ground School - (JUN/JUL/09) & took the FAA exam and received FAA Pilots Knowledge Certificate for Private Pilot, at the FAA , San Diego, CA.  This was an intense summer training evolution but well worth the stress.  Berthing and training was held aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) and provided by the USNSCC and the Flying Midshipmen Youth Aviation Training Program.   The USS Midway does have an amateur station (NI6IW), however, my FAA training schedule did  not allow time for amateur radio operation.  I am now in flight school at the local airport flying as much as possible - weather permitting.

9) My final summer training of 09 was held in August at the Army National Guard training complex - Ft. Custer, MI near Battlecreek, MI.  I was selected to be a staff cadet advising and training Navy League cadets ages 11-12 in basic Seal training.  This training was completed and it was outstanding/great.  This first Seal class number # 001 should be proud of their accomplishments, the training evolution was succesful and therefore will be offered next year.

All training evolutions are very educational and worthwhile. These trainings assistant me in my leadership positions within the corps and in civilian life.  Where else can a cadet receive such great experiences!

I extend Thanks to the NAVY, the CORPS, and organizations assisting to train Naval cadets.  There are great NAVY and USNSCC instructors and officers.

I did meet all the requirements of time in rank, completing non-resident training correspondance courses, and attending additional advanced summer trainings  for advancement.  On 08/JUN/2009  I was appointed by National Headquarters to the advanced rank of Chief Petty Officer, USNSCC, (E-7)   I am honored to receive this advancement/promotion as it has been one of my long term cadet corps goals.  This is the highest rank available within the cadet corps for a cadet.  I have three years remaining in the cadet corps. See http://www.seacadets.org for more information on this outstanding program for young people.

QRP: I enjoy the challenge of QRP very much. It is possible that I might ask you if I can work you QRP (low power - 5 watts or less). I have worked a number of countries and many states QRP.

ECHOLINK: I continue learning more on how to operate on Echolink. Thanks to the various contacts who have assisted me in learning how this system operates. I use echolink frequently.
