I was licensed in 1974 as a novice after two attempts at passing the written
portion, my callsign was WN5NHH. I remained a novice until 1975 when I traveled
to New Orleans FCC and took my general class examination. Was I nervous. There
were 20 people there to upgrade to the general class. Out of those 20 people I
was the only one to pass the code portion and was able to take the general
class license portion that morning, all others had to take the the technician
portion. After a few weeks I received my new call WB5NHH. At first I didnt like
it but it has a good cw fist. I have remained a general since then. In 1984 or
there abouts I took a leave of absence from amateur radio due to equipment
failure and personnal reasons, but I kept my license cuurent. There was a ham
radio operator who had moved into our community and he was instrumental in
getting me back active and on the air. He is an active CW op of which CW is my
first love of ham radio. I operate only cw and only use a straight key. I am a
fire chief of a fire district here and sometimes I have to leave in a hurry to
an emergency from a qso of which I feel bad about leaving the station that I am
talking to.It is good to be back on ham radio and especially on cw and to all
the wonderful cw hams that I have met and have welcomed me back, THANK YOU
