More about football.*** "Modern football was introduced in Portugal in 1884 by Guilherme Pinto Basto. The kick-off of football as a popular phenomenon remained discrete until 1893, when a group from Cascais started off a team with expatriate Britons. In that same year, the first football field was built in the centre of Lisbon, at Campo Pequeno, were today the bulls square is set. Rapidly, more teams emerged. The I World War interrupted the expansion of this activity, but in 1921 the first international meeting took place in Portugal. In 1926, the Portuguese Federation of Football was set up and sports attained an important role in society. Our National Football Team hasn’t been very fortunate indeed but nonetheless it as a few high moments. In 1984, Portugal reached the half final at the European Championship. Two years later, the team was qualified to its second final phase of a World Championship. However, the Portuguese Team wasn’t successful in the group phase, experiencing bad luck with the Polish and Morocco teams. In the last years of the 80’s, Portugal witnessed the turning up of a “Gold Generation” with Rui Costa, João Pinto and Luís Figo. This generation stood out at the juvenile international tournaments and reached the quarter final at the European Championship in 1996 as well as the half final in 2000. By then, the organization of the UEFA Euro 2004 was already entrusted to Portugal. Furthermore, the Portuguese clubs success went on with FC Porto winning the UEFA Cup in 2002/03, adding its victory in the Championship and Cup. This season (2003/2004)", FC Porto also triumphed in the Champions League and in the European Championship.
