I'm Cal, K0DXC - a 14-year-old ham (Amateur Extra class) residing in Jackson, Ohio. I was first licensed in June of 2005 as KC0USZ. In July of 2007 I upgraded my license class and choose to receive the vanity callsign K0DXC. Then on 6/11/2009 I upgraded again and I am now an Amateur Extra! I was first introduced to this hobby by my grandpa, K9MMS. We operated the ARRL Kid’s Day contest in 2003 when I was 8 years old. For a full story on how I was licensed please go to http://K0DXC.com/about I am the 2008 W0 Young Ham of the Year. In July of 2008 my story caught the interest of the 5 Eyewitness News television channel. They sent a reporter out to my house and did a story on me. The video has been aired on TV multiple times and it is also available to view on the web. To see the video, click here or visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULFSoC_EAdc The video used to be on the KSTP website, but it was removed (needed fresh news) so I put it on You Tube. Operating My preferred mode is CW. I am a QRQ enthusiast and a member of the USA HST team. I am QRV on all bands going any speed from QRSS to QRQQ. Fabian, DJ1YFK is my CW elmer. He is training me and helping me get ready for HST 2009. 95% of my operating is CW. I get on SSB mainly only in contests. Contesting is my favorite part of this hobby. For CQ WW CW 2008 I was an operator at K3LR. It was an amazing experience and it was also my first Multi/Multi. Tim is an outstanding host and it was great to join Team K3LR. K0DXC at K3LR CQ WW CW 2008 (K0DXC - back, K4RO - front) I operated as NU1AW/0 on 20 meter SSB during the IARU HF Championship 2008. For more details visit http://www.isd.net/msp02935/iaru.htm
K0DXC (left, operating) and K9MMS (right) at W0EF for field day 2008. WA2MNO (SK) is at far right. I enjoy DXing. I've worked 157 DXCC entities since July of 2007 and I have an unconfirmed DXCC. I am very close to confirming my first 100. I also have the ARRL WAS (Worked All States) award CW only. I enjoy ragchewing, especially via QRQ CW. My station consists of an IC-756PROIII and an IC-706MKIIG. I run 100 watts and do not own an amplifier. Antennas are a 6BTV vertical, DX-B sloper @ 45 feet, and a half wave 80 meter dipole @ 50 feet. I recently put up the dipole and I am very happy with its performance on the high bands. I also have a short BOG receive antenna that is about 200 feet long. Because its so short it doesn't work very well on 160 but it does help on 80 and 40. I am a big supporter of Icom America. All Icom equipment is of the best quality and caliber. Icom radios perform spectacularly in contests, DXing, and even during the casual ragchew. In my opinion, Icom has done a spectacular job creating new and innovative technology that includes spectacular layout / design. Amateur Radio Activities
I try to be active in the Amateur Radio community. I find that a lot of hams think that there aren’t very many young people in this hobby so I like to spread hope that there are! I do everything that I can to encourage people that there is a younger generation of hams out there, and that ham radio will survive! I am the ARRL MN Youth Assistant Section Manager. However, since I moved to Ohio I have been working directly with the ARRL Great Lakes Division. I think my title would be "Great Lakes Division Assistant". I would like to give a big thank you to Skip, KS0J with whom I worked when I was part of the Minnesota Section. Thank you for taking me on board with the ARRL as a “Youth Advocate”. K0DXC - ARRL MN Youth Assistant Section Manager I moderate the GoKarters ham radio website as well as the youth board on hamisland. I am a member of the ARRL, CW FISTS # 13434, SKCC # 4337, NAQCC # 2348, ARES, NCC (North Coast Contesters), MWA (Minnesota Wireless Association), SMC (Society of Midwest Contesters), YACHT, WWYC (World Wide Young Contesters) #741, JCARC (Jackson County Amateur Radio Club), and the Waconia Amateur Radio Club (KC0VIS). I try to inform as many kids as possible about ham radio. Every year I attend JOTA (Jamboree on the Air) with the local radio club. This is a great way to inform boy/girl scouts about amateur radio and it has resulted in many of them getting their licenses! I also got one of my friends to get his Amateur Radio license! He is now Dustin, KD0FAU. I've written several articles and have been published in several magazines and in numerous places online. To view my articles, click on one of the links below.
QSL Information I will QSL via Direct, Bureau, LoTW, eQSL. I would appreciate an SASE. All of my logs are on LoTW and I occasionally upload to eQSL. Outside of Amateur Radio I am currently in the eighth grade. I am taking a high school algebra class and I always get good grades. This year I made the academical honor roll. My favorite subjects are math, english, and phys ed. I recently registered for my high school classes and I am taking college preparatory. I really love to play sports. My favorite sport is baseball but I play many others. I play baseball on metro/traveling teams and will generally play for two-four different teams per year. I hope to play professional baseball someday, but if that doesn't work out I'll definitely do something that involves amateur radio. CU in the next contest!
