I worked in Nicaragua on a number of occasions between 1985 and 1997. The first time I applied for permission to operate a ham station was in 1990, and because my visit was expected to be for only a few months I was not issued a Nicaraguan call, but instead was given permission to operate as N1AW/YN1. In 1993 I was in Nicaragua for almost an entire year, and received YN1ASW, which I renewed during another lengthy visit in 1997.
