Unless you are outside the U.S. and have some very nice stamps on your sending envelope. My younger son has started collecting them. I hope to find myself on the beach this winter with my FT-897D and modified MP-1 Super antenna or a home brew 1/4 vertical which I can configure for 10M, 12M, 15M or 18M. I run off batteries so power may be low. Feel free to ask me to turn it up. For my log please give me your name, location, and my signal report. If in the U.S. please give your state. If Outside the U.S. please give me your country and general location such as Northern Italy, or Central Brazil. I keep a paper log so it may be a few seconds between calls. I try not to take calls without calling CQ or QRZ so everyone starts off the same. Thanks for the contacts! I appreciate all who make an effort to call me while portable. Station on the beach Antenna (The third picture is when it is time to go QRT) Dune crossing and beach where I operate portable on Hutchinson Island.
About the home / mobile stations I hope I am in QSO with you right now or maybe next. What? Your Not a 5/9? Don't take it personal. I give honest reports and appreciate to have them in return. I find it very interesting and have talked to many stations that are 5/0 and others that are 3/9. I was first licensed in 1994. The ability to make phone calls by radio is what drew me in. Although I have not used a phone patch in years, I still have fun with VHF and UHF while mobile. On my long drive to work I like to be aware of openings on 2M or 70cm. You won't catch me rag chewing on 146.520 but I do prefer using simplex when I can. Activity on HF started in January of 2009. My home HF station consists of a FT-897D feeding an OCFD. I do like the 897 and think it is an excellent value. If you have TX audio issues with your 897 check this out. http://members.cox.net/w1aex/897idle.html My radio needed adjusting right out of the box. After getting the radio into spec. I receive great audio reports. The Home QTH The OCFD was a challenge and after several weeks I was on my second one. I now use a balun from Balun Designs. Model 4114ocf. This is a 4:1 and 1:1 balun together. It works great with my ocfd and chokes off the RF that would like to come back down the line.
A bit about me. In my real life I am a photographer for the State of Florida. It is an environmental / corporate type of photo job. Honestly, I am blessed beyond my ability to express it in this area of my life. I have the best photography job in the country, maybe even the world. I get to work with people who sincerely care about the environment and I fly with the most skilled pilots in the world. In an effort to foster good will I sometimes work FM simplex or repeaters while air mobile. The aircraft pictured above and below is a Bell 407. If you catch me in flight please don't complain about the background noise. I can hear it too. Above Left: Running back to the helicopter in a S. FL down pour. Nothing like taking off from a cypress swamp in a thunderstorm. Above Right: Sister ship heading out for a different mission. Below are some more photos from S. Florida. Thanks
