Click for more detail... Thanks for taking the time to read my biography. I live in a very small village in Sherwood Forest, the legendary home of Robin Hood. I married Shirley in 1964, we have two children and 3 grandchildren. I was first licensed as G6YEP, after working 33 Countries on 144 MHz, I wanted to work the rest of the World! For me Ham Radio was not a hobby, it was an OBSESSION, if it meant that I was going to be late getting to work in a morning or working some exotic Island on VK9NS Jim Smiths net (14.222 if my memory serves me correctly) I was late for work!, sorry Boss the car wouldn't start..!!, I met Jim in Germany some time ago at a Ham Fest, and thanked him for the time he devoted to the net, having helped UZ6AXJ "Oleg the Younger"(RW6CX) for a number of years on the "Round Table DX-net" on 14.175, I appreciated the time he gave up for the benefit of others, once again Jim I would like to thank you. Now Jim is S/K and very sadly missed, he was a great DX-er and an all round nice guy....VK9 will never be the same....R.I.P. Mr Smith..... I met Les 7Q7LA on April 21st 1990,he and Ron,7Q7RM, had managed to persuade the Malawian Communications Office to let 7Q7 get back up on air after an absence of 16 years,(1974-1990) I know there are people that worked a 7Q7 station in that time, but the less said about that the better. I gradually built up my "collection" of 7Q stations to look after, ending up with 10 of them, along with 5Z4RL and a couple of other call signs of the 7Q's that had been in Swaziland prior to being in Malawi,(3DA0BX & 3DA0BW Christine and Paul Shaw, 7Q7BX & BW) and after visiting Les and the "Gang" in 1992 I have my own 7Q7 callsign, 7Q7AH For most hams, their first and only 7Q contact was with Ron Macfarlane BEM, who is now S/K. I have ALL of Rons logs from 1947 these include the time when 7Q was ZD6 Nyasaland. I know he is sadly missed, especially on the Magic band,50 Mhz. I miss my daily skeds with Ron a true Gentleman. The only ACTIVE 7Q that keeps me busy now is Harry 7Q7HB, I normally sched him daily, so I can get QSL info, and cards returned via return of post. A quick run down on the gear in my shack. Rig's are: ICOM 775DSP, Kenwood TL922 Amp and a Tennadyne 8 element Log Periodic on a lattice tilt-over mast that will go to 70 feet. I took down my stacked array of 4 X 19 ele Cushcraft "BOOMERS" when I sold my FT 225RD and Dressler 2 mtr amp. I have an FT 726 Multi and dipole ant. for local chatter At the last count I have worked all entities and have all confirmed, but I still enjoy meeting the old "check-ins" from the Dx Net time. Thats it from me for now, look forward to meeting you on the bands! For those who are not sure which DX station cards I handle, here is a quick list, 7Q7RM... 7Q7LA...7Q7JL...7Q7HB...7Q7FM...7Q7BW...7Q7BX...7Q7RL...7Q7AH...7q7JWL...7Q7DC. ..3DA0BX...3DA0BW...5Z4DE...and last but not least the Roarin' Lion from Kenya, Rob 5Z4RL 73's Allan

"Bruno" 50 Kilos of Chocolate Doberman Dog My mode of transport, 2.7 litre Diesel Jaguar, V6 cylinders, 4 overhead Camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, 2 Turbos, one for each bank of Cylinders, 6 speed ZF Automatic Gearbox, a very comfortable, economical car to drive. The days when Diesel engines were noisy, and smelly, have now mostly gone, its very hard to tell diesel engines now once they have started, and the Diesel version of the Jaguar is certainly more economic than the petrol one, without loosing much in the performance department.
Shirley and I were married on the 3rd October 1964.
1000cc Vincent Motor cycle, prepared for racing in the Classic Motor Racing events. When last built in 1956 the Vincent was the fastest Production Motorcycle on sale, it was also the most expensive.
Cherry Blossom along a Road in the local town. Bruno again, when the camera comes out this animal can pose like ANY Super Model.
All pictures taken with a Sony Cybershot Camera. The smaller ones with a P9, the rest a P10. Southwell Minster near Newark Nottinghamshire. The Minster was built around 1100 years ( nearly 1000 years AGO..) There was a shrine to a Saxon Saint.. St Eadburh before the Minster was built, dating back to Saxon times, a couple of Hundred years before. The Minster is WELL worth a visit, note the small headstones to the left of the doorway, which are featured in one of my other pictures. These are old Grave Headstones in front of the door of Southwell Minster, you can see from the dates that people marked graves 400 years ago. My "Head Gardener" my wife, Shirley, has a great passion for gardening, loves to grow Clematis and Fuschia.
Perhaps the most famous single cylinder Racing Motor Cycle of all time, the 500cc "Manx Norton", quiet a few of the World Champion riders started racing these, they are still raced today at Classic Motorcycle Events. Developed from engines in the late 1920's, there are Companies today still building Replicas of them.

This picture of the Bridge and Lock on the Chesterfield Canal outside the Nottinghamshire town of Retford, the lock is called "Whit Sunday Pie lock " having been opened on a Whitsunday.! The canal, which runs 45.5 miles from Chesterfield to the River Trent, was started in 1771 and completed in 1777, the designer was James Brindley who died before it was completed, at an estimated cost of £100,000, today that amount of money would not buy 50 metres of road.! and it was like the rest of the British canal system dug with men using picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows. Clay was used on the bottom to stop the water leaking out. On the Chesterfield Canal are Tunnels,an Aquaduct ( in Kings Park Retford where the Canal passes over the River Ryton) Flights of Locks and many Bridges like this one. Mother (Shirley) Daughter (Julie) Grandaughter Kayleigh, 3 Generations of our Family. G0IAS took the photo and is too ugly to be on it. ! The village Church in ELKESLEY, more than 1000 years old, taken during a snow shower, the Village was mentioned in the " Doomesday Book" so it been around even longer than G0IAS.! 8 Element Log Periodic, made by Tennadyne in the USA. Nice antenna, works 5 bands with no tuning, has no traps to soak RF, and requires very little Maintainance, just the job for an old lazy Ham like G0IAS. !! Mounted on a heavy duty telescopic tiltover free standing mast, it works well for me. Never spoken with any other ham thats had this experience, the pigeon flew at such a speed into the antenna that it ended up about half a METER along the element, YES its DEAD.
These Grey Squirrels (they are RATS with bushy tails), originally from the USA are now such a pest that even HRH Prince Charles wants to kill the pesky little things! Last modified: Tue Aug 11 12:55:40 2009 Does this page contain inappropriate content? If so, Report this page... |
