Click for more detail... Lymm Slitting Mill is an 18th-century iron-slitting mill situated at Lymm Dam in the south of Warrington. It is a unique example of local heritage and history and represents the best surviving example of a slitting mill in the country. It is not known exactly when the mill was built, but it was operational by 1751 providing a great boost to the nail making industry in the North West. With decreasing demand for slit iron, the mill was leased to a textile manufacturer in 1800 and was finally abandoned in 1825. A programme of restoration to conserve the surviving masonry took place during 2005 and 2006 and included a detailed archaeological excavation and survey of the mill. The mill now forms part of the Lymm Heritage Trail. Last modified: Wed Dec 10 02:53:59 2008 Does this page contain inappropriate content? If so, Report this page... |
