I mainly operate HF mobile on 20, 17, 15 & 10m with capability for 6m when open.

From home I can operate all bands from 40m up but due to very high background noise levels tend to use mobile on HF.

On 2m I have a 7 element home made beam (made with copper pipe as the boom & galvanised fence wire as the elements but owing to my position 150m above sea level & looking out to sea all the way from southwest to northeast & can get out quite well.

My mobile set up is:

  • FT-897D
  • RM KL-500 amplifier
  • Home made antenna. Top loaded with interchangable coils for various bands & capacitive "halos"
  • Ground tuner. Maximises ground current to earthing system

I occasionally use a TS-120S in place of the Yaesu in which case I can't operate the amplifier.

I operate from a beach close to my home where I have buried about 15m of copper wire which I connect my antenna base to as my groundplane & tune using a home made ground tuning unit (GTU)

ANTENNA BASE MOUNT

ANTENNA, COILS & TOP "HALOS"

From L to R - 2 piece base section, 20m coil, 15/17m coil, 10m coil, top "halos" (small halo is for 20m, 15m & 10m, larger one works with 15/17m coil  to resonate on 17m)

IN CAR SETUP

From L to R - FT897D, KL500, Ground Tuner (on floor)

Not pretty but works!!

MY USUAL OPERATING POSITION

In this photo the tide is out, I usually like to operate when the water is high.

GROUND TUNING UNIT

SOME HOME ANTENNAS

2m beam - 6m & 10m Loops

(Also use 20m Quad Loop & 1/2 size G5RV)
