Born in Roma (Italy), Sergio Franchi, I0FNS, was licenced as Ham Radio Operator, Class A, on 1972 and is operating since, mainly on HF bands .

Very active in the social and organizational fields, on 1974 he funded the ARI Ham Club of Tivoli of which he has been President for more than 14 years. Leader of the S.T.A . 78, an UNICEF European Expedition and S.U.A. 79, International UNICEF African Expedition, during the period 1978-79 he has been Chief of the Operations of the the Amateur Radio Committee for UNICEF - Italy.

On 1995-96 he has been President of the Amateur Radio Club of the UNITED NATIONS and Station Manager of 4U1UN located at the 38th floor of the UN Headquarters in New York.

On 2001-2002 he has funded the UN HAM RADIO CLUB in indipendent Kosovo of which he has been President.

Sergio Franchi is graduated at the State University of Roma. As Military Engineer, he wears the rank of B. General (R) of the Italian Air Force Corps of Engineers and has operated under UN in several Peace Keeping Operations, in New York, Serbia, Croazia, Haiti, Iraq, Kosovo. On 1997 he was appointed Honorary Engineer of the United Nations Department of Peace Keeping Operations.

Under Special Order nr. 97-0111, on 30th July 1997, the Head of United Nations Peace keeping Operations has awarded, in the UN Headquarters of New York, the United Nations Medal to Sergio Franchi in recognition of his invaluable services.

Nato a Roma (Italia) Sergio Franchi, I0FNS, è radioamatore dal 1972 ,con licenza classe C ed opera da allora prevalentemente sulle bande HF.

Molto attivo nel campo sociale ed organizzativo, ha fondato nel 1974 la Sezione ARI di Tivoli di è cui è stato Presidente per oltre 14 anni. Capo dello STA 78, la spedizione europea in favore dell'UNICEF e del SUA 79, Spedizione Internazionale in Africa in favore dell'UNICEF, durante il periodo 1978-79 è stato Capo delle Operazioni del Comitato Radioamatori per l'UNICEF-Italy.

Nel 1995-96 è stato Presidente del Club Radioamatori delle Nazioni Unite e Manager della Stazione Radio 4U1UN, situata al 38 piano del Palazzo di Vetro dell'ONUa New York.

Nel 2001-2002 ha fondato l'Associazione Radioamatori del Kosovo di cui è stato Presidente.

Sergio Franchi è laureato presso l'Università Statale di Roma e, come Ufficiale del Genio Aeronautico, ricopre il grado di Generale di Br (R).

Ha operato,nella qualità di Dirigente delle Nazioni Unite, in molte Missioni di Pace in New York, in Serbia, in Croazia, in Haiti, in Iraq e nel Kosovo. Nel 1997 è stato insignito del titolo di Ingegnere Onorario dal Dipartimento delle Operazioni di Pace delle Nazioni Unite.

Nel 30 Luglio 1997,con decreto speciale n. 97-0111 gli è stata concessa, a New York, dal Capo del Dipartimento delle Operazioni di Pace delle Nazioni Unite,  Mr Kofi Annan,  la Medaglia dell'ONU "in riconoscimentodei servizi eccezionali prestati all'Organizzazione".
