Rules Award "River Waterfalls Liri"
Permanent Award "Cascate del Fiume Liri" ("Liri Waterfalls").
ARI's section 'Ciociaria 03-02 (IQ0DC)', based in Isola del Liri, in collaboration with the Radio Amateurs of the Province of Frosinone, is patronizing a permanent Award with the aim of endorsing amateur radio activity and of promoting the history, the culture and the traditions of the Ciociaria area.
Why this Award? The Award was an idea of Mr. Daniele Duro IZ0HTW, member of ARI section Ciociaria 03-02. The managing board approved immediately.
History. Isola del Liri is a small town in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. Its population amounts to about 12,000 people. The name derives from the Liri river, which separates in two branches and later join together again, effectively making the town an island.
There are three waterfalls in this city. The first is called La Cascata Grande, "the big fall", which springs from the left branch of the river and is about 30 meters high. It is one of the very few waterfalls in the planet to be found in the historical centre of a town. The second waterfall, from the right branch of the river, is named "Valcatoio". It is a bit less spectacular than the first, mainly because it's controlled by a dam utilized by the nearby hydroelectric power plant. Unlike the Cascata Grande, the waters of Valcatoio do not fall vertically, but along a slope of about 160 meters, with a vertical height of about 27 meters. The third fall was only discovered in 1995, thanks to a chasm which opened on the state highway 82 Valle del Liri. The chasm led to the discovery of an old underground paper factory and of the third waterfall in Isola del Liri.
