IY1SP is the call sign assigned to the Radio Club of La Spezia to be used during any special event where the Guglielmo Marconi's work, especially in La Spezia, is celebrated. It was first in 2001, to celebrate the first trans-atlantic radio communication, that IY1SP went on the air. In july 1897 Marconi went to La Spezia and carried out a series of experiments and demonstration to the former Italian Royal Navy. La Spezia is the site where, in 1861, was built the most important Italian Navy Shipyard. The Navy was deeply interested to the Marconi's new telecommunication system. In La Spezia, in that time, was present an important center of scientific and technical research. In fact the Italian Navy, after Marconi, carried on a long series of trials and experiments, giving a great contribution to the developement of the radiotelegraphy in Italy. So, since over a century, La Spezia, Marconi and the Italian Navy are linked together by the history of wireless. The Italian Navy actually manages a "Museo Tecnico Navale" (Naval Technical Museum http://www.laspezia.net/navale/welcome.html ) where are preserved original Marconi's equipments and other historical equipments as the "Ondina Campale", the set that permitted the rescue of the survivors of the airship "ITALIA" Polar expedition. The airship crashed on to the pack near the north pole in 1928. The Museo Navale collects and preseves also many objects talking about the glorious history of the Italian Navy and the evolution of the war ships from the origins to the present.
