I was first licensed in 1962 as KP4BJI while in the Navy. I was attracted to ham radio through a friend, Ted Holdahl, WF0N. We were in the Navy together in Puerto Rico. We are still friends today after 50 years.
I obtained callsign WA0LGJ in 1964 and used that call until 1992.I operated as WH6IO from 1992 until September 2011.
I am active on 80 through 6 meters using all modes. I prefer the digital modes, primarily CW and JT65. Since 6 December 2011 I have been operating qrp on the digital frequencies.
For 25 years I operated a full-service packet bbs first in Kansas City as WA0LGJ, then Maui and Benicia, CA. as WH6IO. The station still operates on hf packet on a part-time basis on 14.105lsb. I have curtailed the forwarding of packet traffic.
For many years I was active in U.S. Navy MARS both ashore and aboard ships. I held Navy MARS callsign NNN0ABC.
The primary hf rigs are a SDR-1000, a Kenwood TS-480, and a Heath DX-100/Collins 75A2 combination that I use on 75 mtr AM. Current antennas are a 75m dipole fed with ladderline, a 50-year old AV5 multi-band ground mounted vertical, and a 3 element yagi for 6 meters.
Areas of interest aside from digital modes are experimenting with wire antennas and qrp.
