Sherwood "Woody" Charlton, PhD, PE, K5GOE First licensed by the FCC in 1953 as KN5GOE, and a member of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas since 1958, Professor Charlton was a long-time supporter of Amateur Radio on campus and in the state of Arkansas. His ham radio "career" included an invitation to join the DX Century Club in 1959, and eventual awards for contacting 352 approved "DX" countries and for contacting 100 countries on each of five different Amateur Radio bands -- "using only 100 watts and a wire for an antenna" he would have quickly added -- in 1994. Woody even took ham radio with him to exotic locations, operating under the callsign VP2VEN from the British Virgin Islands and under V31OE from Belize. From 1981 until his death in 2002, he was Faculty Advisor to the club, a position that he took quite seriously and one that he spent a considerable amount of time fulfilling. His dedication to the students of the University, and to hobby of Amateur Radio, will not be forgotten by those that knew him. Woody's final DXCC totals are as follows:
He also held a 5 Band DXCC. (thanks to NC1L @ ARRL for the stats) Last modified: Fri Feb 27 14:04:02 2009 Does this page contain inappropriate content? If so, Report this page... |
