My radio days began in the late 1960s when I received my first Novice callsign, WN8FDJ. Back then the Novice call expired in 1 year and was non-renewable. I didn't pass the General theory test and was OFF THE AIR for several years until my early 20s when I received my second Novice ticket, KA4SCZ. Finally, in my mid-20s I received my current call, N4FTD, as a General and eventually upgraded to Advanced.
In the early days as a 13-14 year old I was introduced to Ham Radio by listening to a portable AM-FM-Shortwave receiver and the local 160 meter AM guys as they headed to and from "the salt mines". It was one of my SWL friends who introduced me to Amateur Radio. I still remember fondly my first CW QSO using a Heathkit AT-1 transmitter on 40 meters. That DX from Detroit, Michigan to somewhere in Texas was a thrill I will never forget.
Imostlyenjoy 2 meter simplex with Echolink on 146.43 (PL 67.0) and use my N4FTD-L link for VHF DX. You will find me listening on the *SCARS* conference node via Echolink. The node there is 96140 (IRLP #9614). This is where I run into all my old Ham friends from when I was most active as a Ham, 1984-1994. Each day I also meet new friends there. Come, join in the fun!

PY2KW, Nelson Pala was a phys. ed. teacher at Avare' C.E.E.N.Cel. Joao Cruz High School. He eventually became the principal and was admired by parents and students. He taught me and other students the first steps of marching band, volleyball and in the art of Ham Radio.
