After growing up in Texas, I left college to join the Navy. Retiring after 20
years, I eventually settled in Virginia. After wanting to get my Amateur ticket
for decades, I finally buckled down in January 2003 and studied up to get my
General license in February, and my Extra in August 2003.
I'm focusing for now on emergency communications and communications support for
area events. In May 2003, I supported a 100 mile run (yes, that's 100 mile RUN)
through the nearby mountains. Since then, I've supported several events (the
annual Reston Virginia bicycle ride and the Marine Corps Marathon) operating
from my own bicycle, set up with a Larson VHF-UHF mag-mount antenna fed from my
VX-5R bungie-corded to my handlebars. My EC had recommended that I use more
power, possibly using a mobile rig for its increased power and clearer audio.
Due to the proximity of the antenna to my backside, I decided 5 watts was
plenty, and there have been no problems with the audio from my earpiece with
boom mike. I've operated simplex and through repeaters, and I have been
extremely well satisfied with how my bike system performed. A quality antenna
makes all the difference.
"Never ask a man where he's from. If he's from Texas, he'll tell ya soon
enough. If he ain't, don't embarrass him."

PY2KW, Nelson Pala was a phys. ed. teacher at Avare' C.E.E.N.Cel. Joao Cruz High School. He eventually became the principal and was admired by parents and students. He taught me and other students the first steps of marching band, volleyball and in the art of Ham Radio.
