First licensed in 1970 as WN5CTK, then WB5CTK around 1972.

Served six years as a radioman in U.S. Navy: 1976-1977 NTC San Diego; 1978-1979 Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport MS; 1979-1981 USNS Mississinewa (T-AO-144 fleet oiler (callsign NBSZ) with Task Force 63 with USS Nimitz and USS America carrier groups in Mediterranean; 1981-1982 Naval Communications Stations (NAVCOMSTA) Iceland (callsign NRK) remote transmitter site in Grindavik, where many HF contacts were enjoyed using my old call WB5CTK/TF, and with TF3SG on 6 meters.

Current "late vingate" HF station consists of Elecraft K3, Optibeam OB9-5 yagi for 20, 17, 15, and 10, M2 5-element yagi for 6, and homebrew vertical for 40.

"Old School" HF Equipment

For ragchewing I still enjoy using this old classic now and then:

  • Yaesu FT-102 ("Malcomized" to better than new condition by NC4L)
  • Kenwood TL-922

Vintage 1982, the FT-102 is one of my old favorites for hf:

  • Very clean TX audio.
  • High peak envelope power @ 225 watts on SSB, continuous key down power of 160 to 180 watts easily drives an amp with super clean signal (three 6141B tubes in final PA).
  • Outstanding A.M.capabilities:110% to 120% on positive modulation peaks without cutoff at the negative or positive peaks for superbtransmit audio.
  • Receive sensitivity @ 0.12 to 0.145 uV for 10 dB S+N/N through wide SSB filter with RF amp engaged. MDS on CW -142 dBM with narrow CW filter.
  • No synthesizer noise (it has no synthesizer).
  • High voltage, high dynamic range jfet front end (2SK125 doublet Darlington configuration).
  • Just look at it--ain't it pretty!
