Autism is a disorder in the information processing of the brains. Information that comes through the senses (sight, smell, sound, etc.) is processed differently in people with autism. It is difficult for the details that they perceive to be processed into a coherent whole. As a result, people with autism problems with communication, social interaction and imagination. Autism is a lifelong, often invisible disability that affects all areas of life in all stages of life. The disability brings specific strengths and weaknesses with it. Most people with autism have a greater or lesser extent their lifetime expert guidance. With greater understanding of the environment and proper guidance, many people with autism to school or work, relationships with others and thereby maintain a sensible and meaningful role in society. More than one percent of the Dutch population - about 190,000 people - has a form of autism.
