FRO - The Voluntary Radio Organisation

(In Swedish  FRO - Frivilliga Radioorganisationen)

Radio, telecommunication and computers in the service of society

"No communication, no control"
This expression is sometimes used to stress the importance of good communications to an effective system of command and control. In FRO, the Voluntary Radio Organisation, we see this as our guiding star and the reason behind our efforts to ensure that good communications are available to the total defence organisation.

FRO was established in 1946, initially as part of SSA, the Swedish Association of Radio Amateurs. Experience gained from the period of national preparedness during the second World War led to the conclusion that we should improve the communications skills of signals personnel. It was therefore proposed that further training should be made available on voluntary basis for those, who already were skilled telegraphists - namely the radio amateurs - with a view to increasing the number of skilled signal personnel.

Membership in FRO is open to all Swedish citizens and other nationalities living in Sweden - men, women and children, regardless of age or technical skills. The activites of our organization are based simply on an interest in communications and related technology.

Many of our members are involved in communication either professionally or as a hobby. Communication is not only for specialists. In everyday life we all encounter communications in many different forms, for example radio communications, mobile telephones, fax machines and computers. But with the right training it is possible to put one's communication skills to good use. With this objective in view, FRO makes the necessary training available to its members.

FRO has 5800 members and is organised on the basis of 120 local clubs in 27 districts all over the country.

Pictures of our club station will be uploaded soon.
