I was SV0LM from 1997 to 2002 while working for the Voice of America at its former Kavala Transmitting Station. The station was actually somewhat distant from Kavala. The nearest city was Xanthi in NE Greece, in the region known in English as Thrace. I started out as the Transmitter Plant Supervisor there and moved into the position of Deputy Manager about halfway through my five years tour of duty. The station was shut down a few years ago, and the leased land was was returned to Greece. The VOA site, slightly east of the Nestos River, sat on nearly 2000 acres of land, with about two miles of beach front on the Agean Sea. The station employed twelve 250 kW shortwave transmitters and a 600 kW solid state AM band transmitter. We ran an additional Harrris DX-600 600 kW AM band transmitter quite a distance away on the Island of Rhodes. That site was linked via satellite to the Kavala site for control and program audio. SV0 is the prefix assigned to long term expatriot residents in Greece. I resided in the SV7 call area. Please QSL to me with SASE at the address above. 73, Charles Lewis - now KY4P Last modified: Wed Dec 17 17:53:27 2008 Does this page contain inappropriate content? If so, Report this page... |
