Activated Sept. 29-30/ 2012 to commemorate the audacious action of a British Army commando, leaded by Lnt. Tom GORDONHEMMING, on the beach of the Normandy village of LUC-sur-MER, by the night of Sept. 28, 1941.

The operation named "CHOPPER" was devised to collect information on the german coastal defences and their reactivity.

The reaction was immediate as the party was submitted to a heavy fire at landing, resulting in four casualties with two men lost

and two rescued.

The two men killed were buried in the local churchyard, with the military honors of the german army.

After the war, Cptn. Hemming visiting the graves of his two men, expressed the will to be buried near them. This was done on

Sept. 21, 1994 at his death. All three soldiers now rests peacefully in the churchyard at Luc-sur-mer. A place in the village was

named in their memory and a stele erected to recall the glorious story of these brave men.
