Aslam was fascinated to operate walkie-talkies but he never knew the procedure to own one. When he was a graduate student, Amateur Radio Association of Madurai published an article entitled "Contact the world with Rs120". The article was with a photo of few Hams with their handys. This made a studious associate member of ARAM. Later on when ARAM was dissolved due to some internal conflict, Aslam took up the role of teaching Morse code to the trainees.  He passed Amateur station operator certificate (Grade II) in the year 1998. He was given a callsign VU3AQE.

The like-minded HAMs founded the Chamber of Amateur Radio of Madurai - which is charmingly called CHARM.Later on, during 2000 he appeared for ASOC Grade I examination along with his trainees and was successful. In the year 2005 again with the help of his Guru VU2VQL Prof Sadasivam, he appeared for ASOC Advanced Grade Exam and succeeded. He applied for upgrading his license to the WPC wing, DOT, Govt of India. He was given a callsign VU2AXL. Presently Aslam is working as Asst. Professor in Botany at Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy. He is interested now in appying HAM Radio communication technology to Agriculture.
