Licensed in 1953 as WN7THY (Novice) at Portland, Oregon (age 14), then upgraded to Technician and General (W7THY), same year. Was K0GPR ('56-'61) while studying electrical engineering at Univ. of Nebraska (BScEE), then WA6ZFD, WA3LJN and WA7UQP. The W7THY call was reinstated in 1973. Retired January 2006 after 45 year electrical engineering career in aerospace, federal government and consulting. Constructed a magnetic-loop antenna for 80 thru 20 meters which is about two meters diameter and 2-1/2 meters in height on its mounting stand in the garage (2009 Field Day photo above). It is tuned by a motor-driven Jennings UCS-400 vacuum variable capacitor. Other indoor antennas are: (1) Mini-Products HQ1 two element mini beam for 6, 10, 15 & 20 meters; (2) a similar 10, 15 & 20 meter dipole located behind the 'diamond-shape' reflector of the HQ-1, (3) a 5/8 wavelength Larsen vertical for two meters, and (4) an inverted 'L' covering 80 and 40 meters. A Cushcraft R7 vertical for 40 through 10 meters is in the back yard. A MFJ-1786 magnetic-loop antenna covering 30 through 10 meters is for portable operations. Amateur radio has been great fun, and a means to develop and maintain electrical and electronic skills. Also, it has been a marvelous way to meet other amateurs and maintain contact with friends during a career which included many relocations. In 1961 I was called to follow Christ Jesus in a life of faith, and like many others, I sense the joy of His pleasure as I obey Him. "When you were dead in your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code (Law of Moses), with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (Colossians 2:13-14 NIV). Last modified: 2012-05-16 15:25:25, 2106 bytes cached
