Originally licensed in 1956 as K9CUC. Surrendered that call when I passed my Amateur Extra license test (20WPM) at the FCC office in Honolulu in 1979, and was issued my present call, KH6P.

Captain, United States Navy (Retired). Nuclear submariner. Marine Engineer. Currently on the Faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering, and Chief Engineer, Hawaii Undersea Reseach Laboratory. HURL operates two deep diving submersibles, Pisces 4 and 5, plus an RCV-150 remote operated vehicle. Our support ship is the University of Hawaii research vessel R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. Diving operations have been primarily near the Hawaiian Island chain, but we have also operated as far west as American Samoa and as far south as New Zealand. I am at sea about 4 months each year. Our crew has also made several documentaries for television.

Life Member ARRL, AMSAT-NA. Charter Life Member, Pacific DX'ers. Member, Honolulu Amateur Radio Club. Member Collins Collector Association. Own a pristine Collins 75A-4 and KWS-1 and accessories. Enjoy restoring the old classic rigs and putting them back on the air.

Achieved WAS via RS-6, RS-8, AO-7, and AO-8 from Hawaii in 1983. ME, VT and NH were the hardest to contact, with only about one minute mutual window per month. Worked about 40 countries on AO-10 and AO-13 while these satellites were active. Have also made several EME contacts on 2 meters, but no longer have an antenna or amplifier capable of EME.

Currently active on HF using an Elecraft K-3, Icom IC-751A, and ETO Alpha 374.  Antennas include a Cushcraft R-5 and Par End Fed half wave antenna for 30 meters.  Working to get my Collins 75A-4 and KWS-1 back on the air, as well as improve the antenna situation in preparation for next sunspot cycle. Plans are being made to install a roof top tower and hexbeam, plus an antenna for 40 meters. Also working to get my UHF/VHF antennas back up and ready for the next high altitude satellite.

CW is my first love in amateur radio, and I generally operate CW with a J-38 straight key or bug. I also enjoy SSB and can be found on the ANZA DX Net several nights a week. I do use the LOTW, but prefer paper QSL's. I QSL100% for all cards received.

If you are visiting Honolulu, please join us at Sizzler Restaurant, Pearl Ridge for breakfast on Tueday mornings at 0700. We have a great group of DX'ers, and you are always welcome. The Honolulu Amateur Radio Club also meets at the same location on the third Saturday of the month in January, March, May, July, September, and November at 0900. Join us for breakfast if you are in the area.

Here are two photos of my family taken on the North Shore of Oahu in March 2010. Amateur radio is a great hobby, but family always comes first!
