EL Radio Club de Carabineors de Chile, en su continuo andar no quizo dejar pasar la oportunidad de participar en una nueva activación del evento ILLW 2011, en esta oportunidad con el Faro Quintay; ya que el 2010 nuestra participación con el Faro Peninsula Los Morros XR2M tubo que se suspendida por el terremoto que azoto a Chile el 27 de febrero.

FARO QUINTAY

En un roquerio de la Caleta de Quintay, está enclavado el faro de Quintay, cuyas coordenadas son 33º 10’59 77” S; 71º 41’9 73” O. y que fue puesto en funcionamiento el año 1938 para guiar los barcos balleneros de la planta Ballenera INDUS de Quintay, inaugurada en 1943. Actualmente este faro ha sido refaccionado y se encuentra funcionando energizado por celdas solares.

La Caleta de Quintay se encuentra a 47 K .m sur de Valparaiso, el principal Puerto Chileno, ubicado en la Quinta región de Chile y a 122 KM de Santiago, Capital.

Esta planta ballenera, fue la mayor empresa nacional dedicada a la caza de ballenas, llegando a capturar más de 1.600 ejemplares y producir cerca de 5.000 toneladas de aceite en un solo año de funcionamiento. Hasta 1964 produjo aceite, jabon, cebo, peinetas, detergentes y otros cerrando definitivamente en 1967 por motivos económicos.

La importancia que tuvo esta industria tanto para la economía y el desarrollo del país en aquellos años, como para las familias de la localidad, es a menudo desestimada en gran parte debido a la mala reputación actual de la actividad ballenera. Pero la influencia de esta industria se siente todavía de muchas maneras en Quintay, y su patrimonio histórico es hoy rescatado para las nuevas generaciones.

Esta antigua planta ballenera hoy está abierta como museo, administrada por la Fundación Quintay, producto de un proyecto de una universidad, para aprender de la historia del negocio ballenero en nuestro país, y para sentirnos orgullosos que Chile haya firmado hace muchos años un tratado internacional donde se comprometía a no cazar nunca mas estos hermosos animales.
