The callsign "AB5L" was originally held by Michael Hopkins of Dallas,
Texas. Michael was an eccentric, brilliant and irreverent curmudgeon who liked
to poke fun at the Ham Radio Elitists. Michael had a cult following throughout
the hobby. He penned the famous "Frank and the Five Meter Liberation
Army" series of stories.
Michael Hopkins died on Thursday afternoon, June 24, 2005 on his front porch.
Michael was a good friend of mine and he tutored me in my journey through Ham
Radio. That is why I am proud to have acquired his callsign as soon as it was
available. I will continue his battle against the establishment.
Now, about me:
Rev. Martin K Reeves, a self-proclaimed "Former Boy Genius", has been
speaking of himself in the plural and third party since they were a young boy.
Born in the Spring of 1963 in Dallas, Texas, Rev. Reeves is a noted inventor
and scientist and has developed such useful items as Solar Powered Night Vision
Goggles and Dehydrated Water. He muddled through Puberty and High School
without much fanfare until February of 1981; That is when Reeves obtained his
Novice license. Until that time, his only communication with the outside world
was a series of grunts and strange, unexplainable prank phone calls.
Today, Rev. Reeves splits his time between his homes in Fabulous Las Vegas and
Dallas, Texas. Besides ham radio, he enjoys Hiking, Biking, and jumping to
conclusions, but despite his athleticism, he does not consider himself an
"athletic supporter".
He currently operates CW on 10-80 Meters, occasionally QSY-ing up to Six
Meters. Reeves is the keeper of the AB5L Memorial Beacon, operating on 50.065
mhz. His ultimate ham radio goal is to spearhead a campaign to send a ham radio
transponder to the surface of the Moon.
