First licensed in 1963 as WNØHPU in Independence, MO. Upgraded to general class
,WAØHPU, in 1964 while a senior in High School. Then when I was in the Air
Force, and while stationed at Iraklion Air Station on Crete I operated as
SVØWCC from the barracks using an SBE-33 transceiver and a dipole strung
between barracks. The first sergeant never noticed it until a month before I
rotated back to the states. It was a unique experience operating as a DX
station. Caused many a pile-up. Back home I settled in Syracuse and got the
call sign WA2RKF. Then moved to Tulsa and changed over to WB5LBH. When the
vanity call sign program started up I requested and received the call sign
W9QJE. This was my uncle's call back in the late 1930's and early 1940's. He
never bothered to renew it after he returned from WWII, but kept his shack and
radio gear and as a boy I became interested in radio from tuning around on his
old NC-100. I finally upgraded to Extra and used the vanity call sign program
to obtain my present call sign, K5WQ. My operating interests are mainly HF CW
using tube gear (glowbugs).
