Originally earning my Novice license when I was 12, I enjoyed CW contacts from
the Colchester, CT home my family lived at. Using vintage Hallicrafters &
Hammarlund equipment and a 10-15-20-40-80 fan dipole Dad (W8MHS-silent)and I
constructed. I recall eagerly going to bed early at 7PM so I could wake at
2-3AM and get on the air - propagation was good then and I was pleased to pull
in signals from the west coast. When I hit high school, a Ham radio hobby
became no asset in social circles, so I took a 20 or so year hiatus from the
hobby. A few years ago before he passed my father was continually teasing me
with many DX contacts from his New Jersey location, and rekindled my interest
in Amateur Radio - I obtained my General ticket and went back on the air. Today
I use some more modern equipment - for my rig today, I am using an ICOM IC-756
Pro II (which I am quite pleased with). My 2nd-hand Mosley TA-53M has allowed
me to catch some swell DX (even though it is only 18-20 foot off the ground on
my Polish mounting). Occasionally I employ an Ameritron AL-811 to bolster my
bidding for DX hunting, and when necessary, I fire up the T-Rex of amps, my
Henry 3-KA console. Hope to catch you on the air soon! 73's – Steve
