WA2KBZ, b. 1944, grew up in NJ; following in father's footsteps (W5EWF;first
Army MARS station and code champ)became Novice in 1959, now Extra Class & FCC
1st Class phone (w/Radar/WJML eng'r). Recently retired after 27 years at
Motorola, was Sr. systems engineer & Chief HF-SSB Consultant; traveled world
with MICOM/Triton SSB products - like a 12 year world-wide DX-pedition. Have
operated from Turkey as TA1KS, w/15 kw HF RIG on a mountain near Ankara, as 2
day gov't requested Ham Radio demo,before it was legal generally, and again on
my DX'peditions last 3 years to Turkey as TA0/WA2KBZ (& will again this summer;
Turkey is a great place to visit & hams there are both helpful and friendly).
The above photo is top of Buyukada (Prince's Island) near Istanbul (NO IOTA) on
my first operation, at a Greek Orth Monastery/w/cafe; Istanbul is over my right
shoulder, about 30 miles to NW. Turkey has many great historical sights and
wonderful food. My apt. is lower down, 165 Ft. above sea; this site is about
2000 and great for DX!
Have also operated in Newfoundland, across Canada, on ships(was emergency
operator on an Italian liner in an Agean Sea storm - real Sparks was hurt),
Jamaica, Aruba and held JY9KS (w/ help from Wayne Green of 73). Operate 160M
(49 states)to 450 Mc. My greatest QSO's were with Dad after a long seperation,
Chatam Is - 45 minute 40 CW QRP, moon bounce to Sweden w/90 ft dish on 432. My
hobbies: Wireless at sea & antique radio, Astronomy, play folk music, sailing,
fishing, target shooting, Scouting (22 years). Am USAF vet, Chief Warrant
Officer-4 (US Army SC (Ret)& CAP Major. Owned a lightning protection /
grounding company(Viking Commnication Svc's, now retired from last position as
Sr. RF Eng'r w/Alamosa PCS (Sprint Affiliate)in Jeff City, MO [QSL to 3601
Schott Rd. Jeff City 65101]. Credit Ham radio for radio career.
